Rosh Hashana Challahs Make the World Go Round

Okay, maybe that title isn't totally true.
But it might be.

We made challah for Rosh Hashana - many many challahs. It was a family project - my kids know how to braid challah with three strands and we're working on four strands now. But we took a break from the four strand lessons to work on round four strand challah. I had never made real braided round challahs before. The closest I've ever come is making one very long and thin braid and then twirling the braid into a circle.

But this, my friends, is the real deal.
This is four strands, criss-crossed over each other and braided upside down, before it's turned over to reveal a beautiful braided round challah.

It only took me three tried to understand the pictures.
Here's what I looked at - I followed Creative Jewish Mom's photo tutorial. Except let's also understand that I looked (squinted) at this on my phone, so maybe trying to follow the directions from an actual computer screen might be a little easier.

We also added a crumb topping to ours - the same topping you might find on an apple cranberry crumble, except without margarine or oats. We mixed together a little oil, flour, brown sugar, white sugar and cinnamon and mixed. Just enough to make it all stick together but not enough to make it mushy.

If you're looking for a fantastic challah recipe, here's one. I've been using it for years, after going through many other recipes that ultimately failed me at one time or another. This one has never let me down.

The challahs are currently living, double wrapped, in ziploc bags, in the freezer, awaiting Rosh Hashanah - which is like in five minutes.

Gotta get moving on a menu.

:)
