And each year, I sit in the succah, looking around at all the gorgeous and creative decorations that we have collected over the years, and I smile. Then I look at the walls and I get antsy, because they are bland and colorless and I have this very real need to color on them.
But the weather turns chilly here in the fall and Josh is very quick about taking the succah down and storing it away for the next year, especially if there is rain the forecast, because waiting for a canvas succah to dry out can take a while.
This year, for a reason that I cannot recall, Josh and the kids built the succah weeks before Succot - maybe it was the only free Sunday? I don't know. But I do know that there was extra time and I grabbed it. Sharpies worked surprisingly well, and the drawings made it through a rain-filled holiday intact, so in case you are hoping to do something similar next year, know that these Sharpies really are permanent and waterproof.
