I've been blessed with four kids, one of whom has had a cold since the day he was born. All my kids are heavy mouth breathers, but this particular child - this one I can hear across the house.
When we lived in New Jersey, he'd get a cold around Succot time and not get rid of it until way after Pesach - coughing all night, every night and on a really good night, coughing so hard, he'd throw up. I know, TMI. My apologies, but I do have a point here.
I was kind of hoping against hope that he wouldn't get a cold over this Florida winter because it's so much milder - and I kind of got my wish. He made it until mid-February before he got a cold - and that's really almost March because February is so short. Anyway, he's been coughing every night and we've been running in with towels to put around his bed because we're such good parents. Or maybe it's because he just got new carpet in his room. You can choose the reason.

I have a great and wonderful and highly treasured friend named Goldie who has been mentioned here numerous times. Goldie has a child who seems to have a matching cough with my kid's cough. We're cute like that.
Goldie has also been on this Paleo journey with me (or rather, I will her. She's much better at this whole not-eating grains thing than I am) and has done a ton of research on, well, basically everything. And the other day she told me to try some apple cider vinegar, honey and warm water mixed together for the cough. She had given it to her son for a few days and he has barely coughed since. Crazy. I know. And he enjoyed the drink too.
I tried it in our house - last night I made the boy here drink it up. Goldie said to use 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in the honey water. My ears don't work so good because I heard 1 tablespoon - and that might possibly be why my child did not especially enjoy his apple-y drink. Nevertheless, I set the leftover pan of brownies from Shabbos next to him and explained the way the world works - you drink, you eat. End of story.
But haha, it wasn't the end of the story! He drank it all - and last night, the child did not cough. At all. As in this is a miracle elixir that should be bottled and sold on a website that perhaps I will design and Goldie will run.
Either way, if you have a cough and a cold or a loved one who happens to sleep in a room near yours has a loud cough and cold, drink this. For real.
1 teaspoon (although we learned that 1 tablespoon works as well)
hot water in a mug
enough honey to mask the vinegar taste
It's not an actual recipe; you'll have to mix and try until you come up with a drinkable liquid but once you do, you're golden.
I debated having him drink it again tonight, but I feel like we'll take a night off and see if the coughing starts up again.
I kind of felt bad last night that he really didnt like it.
And also, I'm out of brownies.
:)
