Okay, so first things first. This whole blog idea came about when I decided to make a birthday chair. For anyone who doesn't follow DIY crafty blogs, birthday chairs are the “it” thing to make right now. And so naturally, I just had to make one. Except that I didn’t want to buy a chair – that costs money and I don't like to spend mine. Anyway, after some back and forth with my brother, he agreed to bring me one of my grandmother’s old kitchen chairs from her apartment, where he now lives. So thanks Uncle Josh!
The chair then proceeded to sit in my basement for a few months while I meditated on it. Well, not literally on it – more like about it. After nearly falling over it in the laundry room a few times, the chair finally presented itself in my kitchen and I knew that I needed to do something with it before the kids broke it. So I did. Hooray! I took this old metal chair with the torn (faux?) leather seat. I unscrewed the seat and tore off the old brown covering and replaced it with some new birthday cupcake fabric and a staple gun. Note: staple guns are very loud and can wake up sleeping children.
Next I shlepped the chair frame out to the backyard and spray painted it in a sea-colored blue. I waited. It dried. Reattached the seat and went to sleep. The next day I painted these small wooden letters that I had found in the dollar store – I had no idea what I was going to use them for but those kinds of things are the best kind of buys. Painted the letters “Happy Birthday Chair” in white, outlined with black paint pen and then made polka dots on each letter with different colored paint pens.
I then hot glued (everyone should own a hot glue gun) the letters to the front of the chair back and hot glued large rhinestones around the whole chair back. It looks very cool if I may say so myself – and the kids love love love loved it. Our Happy Birthday Chair has now been through three birthdays in our happy home and will be used for years to come. This is the way mommies make memories, my friends.
Are you a Mom?
Of course you are,
your shirt is dirty :)
